Rotarian and Non-Rotarian of the Year

The Rotary Club of Williamsport recognized the service of two area women at its July 13th meeting during which the annual Rotarian and Non-Rotarian of the Year awards were presented.

District Governor Carl W. Askew presented the Non-Rotarian of the year award to Dr. Beth McMahon. In recognizing her accomplishments Askew noted her volunteer service and leadership on behalf of a variety of community organizations, her tenure as a faculty member of Lock Haven University and her work as a motivational speaker.

Rotarian Marie Harris was recognized for her many community activities both as a Rotarian and as a Pastor, mentor and advocate for the disadvantaged.

District Governor Askew announced that $97 million dollars had been raised to match the $355 million donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to assist Rotary with its’ goal of eradicating polio.

Rotary promotes the concept of service above self and has prioritized local, national and international projects that improve water quality and accessibility, literacy and disease prevention and treatment.

The new 2008-09 RI theme was unveiled by RI President-elect Dong Kurn Lee at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. The International Assembly is an annual training event that prepares district governors-elect for the upcoming Rotary year.
